CAIRO: The Egyptian Ministry of Transport is trying to resolve the problem of traffic jams in the two land ports of Argeen and Goustol on the Egypt-Sudan border.

The ministry said the truck pile-up and resulting queues at the border were caused by a slowdown in customs clearance procedures at land crossings on the Sudanese side. Egyptian exports to Sudan in trucks aggravated the situation.

The Egyptian Council of Ministers addressed the issue and after coordination with the Ministry of Transport and other concerned parties, a directive was issued to facilitate the movement of traffic quickly.

It was announced that the Council of Ministers approved a new system for regulating the arrival of trucks at crossings.

Trucks at the borders are to use a convoy system and will move in numbers corresponding to the capacity of the port to avoid congestion.

Authorities sent ambulances to congested areas and distributed water and food to truck drivers caught in the chaos.

The ministry added that medical facilities and food supplies will be available to all truck drivers at the assembly points.
