CAIRO: Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, held crucial discussions with Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), on Wednesday to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The talks, also attended by the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland, centered on strategies to ensure the safety of civilians and the consistent delivery of essential services and relief aid to Gaza, as the region grapples with intensifying violence that has displaced more than 263,000 people.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry released a statement emphasizing the focus of the discussions, stating, “The meeting discussed ways to provide protection for civilians and ensure regular access to services and relief aid in Gaza.” Shoukry highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and affirmed Egypt’s full support for UN agencies working to deliver crucial humanitarian assistance.

Gaza Strip Facing Devastating Crisis Amid Israeli Airstrikes

The Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million people, is facing a devastating crisis, exacerbated by a series of Israeli airstrikes leaving more than 1025 innocent Palestinians martyred. Israel’s military actions have significantly impacted the lives of civilians, compelling Egypt to emphasize the urgent need for international assistance.

Of particular concern is the blockade imposed by Israel, cutting off vital supplies, including food, water, fuel, and electricity, leaving the population in dire straits. Shoukry condemned these actions as a violation of international humanitarian law, warning against policies of collective punishment, starvation, and siege.

The Rafah crossing, the sole entry point to Gaza not controlled by Israel, has been a focal point of humanitarian efforts. Despite being bombed multiple times by Israeli aircraft, it remains a critical lifeline. The Egyptian Red Crescent has been working tirelessly to deliver urgent aid, including medical supplies, to their counterparts in Gaza. The first shipment of medical aid successfully reached Gaza through the Rafah crossing on Monday, providing a glimmer of hope amid the ongoing crisis.
