CAIRO: Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Monday urged the United Nations Security Council and international powers to intervene immediately to stop “the dangerous Israeli military escalation in Lebanon”.

This appeal comes in the wake of escalating violence, with Israeli airstrikes reportedly killing at least 356 people, including 24 children and 42 women, and displacing thousands in Lebanon on Monday.

Cairo, a key mediator in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, has expressed deep concern that the current situation threatens to drag the entire region into a wider war. The Egyptian government reiterated its solidarity with Lebanon and condemned any violations of the country’s sovereignty.

The humanitarian crisis has worsened, with thousands of families fleeing southern Lebanon as the Israeli military issued warnings for civilians to vacate areas in the south. This marked the first such warning directed at residents in Lebanon since the conflict in Gaza erupted.

Meanwhile, world powers have urged both Israel and Hezbollah to step back from the brink of all-out war. For months, Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in cross-border clashes in support of Hamas.

Egypt has stated its commitment to working toward a ceasefire in Gaza as part of broader efforts to restore calm and stability in the region.
