CAIRO: Egypt on Thursday welcomed the appointment of Sigrid Kaag as senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for war-hit Gaza.
It also lauded the implementation of measures to facilitate the entry and monitoring of aid to Gaza.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday announced Kaag’s appointment and she is expected to start her work on January 8.
Kaag will coordinate, monitor, facilitate, and verify humanitarian relief consignments to Gaza strip and setup a UN mechanism to accelerate their movement through states that are not party to the conflict.
Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zaid in a post on social media platform X said that Cairo welcomes the appointment of Sigrid Kaag as a Senior Humanitarian Coordinator to Gaza.
Ceasefire indispensable to end Gaza crisis
He further stated that reaching a ceasefire remains indispensable to end crisis in Gaza.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the Palestine Committee was held on Wednesday in preparation for the Arab Parliament session on Gaza on Thursday.
Speaker Adel Abdulrahman Al-Asoumi during the meeting, renewed the Arab Parliament’s support for the Palestinian cause.

He condemned the inability of the global community to stop the brutality of the Israeli occupation forces against the defenseless Palestinian people.
The parliament will hold a special session on Palestine on Thursday at the headquarters of Arab League Secretariat in Cairo.
