Damascus had been isolated by several regional nations while the membership of Syria was suspended by Arab League in 2011 after protests and civil war in the country.

However, several Arab countries extended support to quake-hit Syria. UN and Syrian government said that over 5,900 had died in the recent quake in Syria.

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah El-Sisi also spoke with President Assad by phone for the first time on Feb. 7. According to Arab news, a high level of delegation from around the Arab world also met President Assad in Damascus.

Egypt has sent several shipments of relief and aid to Syria in recent weeks. El-Sisi and Erdogan met and also shook hands on the occasion of 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Similarly, Turkish companies earlier this month vowed to invest $500 million in Egypt.
