Egypt’s Foreign Minister Heads to Washington for Talks

CAIRO: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry traveled to Washington on Tuesday to meet members of House of Representatives and Senate during his stay in the US. Egypt’s top diplomat will meet Congress foreign policy committee officials with the aim of strengthening strategic ties, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

The trip will also include discussion with a number of research centers and think tanks, in addition to media engagements, the spokesman said. Abu Zeid added that the FM will also join an Arab-Islamic ministerial committee meeting on December 7.

The committee will hold talks with the US secretary of state, US lawmakers, and media persons in an effort to stop the current war in Gaza, in line with the mandate issued by the Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit.

Meanwhile, Sameh Shoukry also affirmed Egypt’s categorical rejection of attempts to force people of Palestine out of Gaza.  The FM made the remarks during a telephone call with Colombian Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva. Shoukry and Leyva also discussed the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip, the necessity of an urgent truce and the opportunity to set up humanitarian truces to bring in aid.
