BEIJING: At least eight people were killed and five others were injured after a vehicle crashed into pedestrians in Changsha city in central China early on Saturday, authorities said, without specifying whether the act was intentional or not.
The incident took place shortly after midnight in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, police said in a statement.
“A motor vehicle hit pedestrians,” it said, adding that eight people had died in the tragedy and another five had been injured, at least some of whom had been hospitalised.
The suspect, a 55-year-old local resident, has been detained for questioning. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the motive behind the incident and whether it was a deliberate attack or a tragic accident.
Road accidents are relatively common in China due to varying safety standards.
