Elections 2024 Updates: Citizens Cast Vote in Northwest Pakistan and Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Polling for the General Election 2024 kicked off in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including merged tribal districts, on Thursday, running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. without interruption across all districts.

In Peshawar, voters, both male and female, turned out in large numbers at polling stations, engaging in the electoral process within a transparent and fair environment.

Former Ambassador Manzoorul Haq expressed his satisfaction after casting his vote, urging others to follow suit and avoid afternoon rush by voting early.

Sundas Amin, a Presiding Officer at a polling station in Govt School Bara Lines Peshawar, noted the prompt arrival of voters since the 8 a.m. start time.

Inside polling stations, facilities like water and seating were provided. Strict identity verification was conducted by polling agents.

Similarly, in Nowshera, Mardan, Khyber, Mohmand, and other tribal districts, voters, including youth and persons with disabilities, turned out in significant numbers. Notable crowds were observed at polling stations in various districts, such as Parachinar Kurram, Orakzai, DI Khan, Mardan, Swat, Dir, Malakand, Chitral, Abbottabad, Buner, Shangla, and Kohat.

The Election Commission of Pakistan established over 15,696 polling stations for 21.928 million registered voters in KP. These voters are deciding the fate of 713 candidates for national assembly seats and 1,814 candidates for provincial assembly seats.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, approximately 11.944383 million male and 9.983737 million female voters will exercise their right to vote. Polling stations were set up with 4,180 for males, 4,287 for females, and 6,600 combined stations. Over 180,000 trained polling staff were deployed to facilitate voters.

Supporters of candidates established polling camps outside stations to educate and guide voters, particularly youth. Security measures were stringent, with police, Frontier Corps, and other agencies deployed to ensure safety, and firearms were prohibited within polling stations. The election in NA 8 Bajaur was postponed following the death of a candidate. –APP
