ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the elections on the National Assembly’s NA-8 and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly’s PK-22 constituencies after a PTI-affiliated candidate was shot dead in the constituency on Wednesday.
The ‘independent’ candidate Rehan Zeb Khan — contesting from NA-8 and PK-22 — was shot dead in KP’s Bajaur district during his canvassing in the Sadiqabad Phatak Bazar area of the tribal district.
Meanwhile, the election was also postponed in PK-91 Kohat-II in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa following the death of a candidate, Asmatullah Khattak, who passed away on Tuesday. A public notice was issued by the returning officer (RO) concerned in this regard.
Citing deterioration in the law-and-order situation just a week ahead of nationwide elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned an important session on Thursday.
The top electoral body summoned the session at 3pm to discuss the fresh wave of violent incidents in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces in the run-up to the general elections — scheduled for February 8.
Interior minister, secretary interior, chief secretaries of provinces, inspector generals (IGs) and representatives of intelligence agencies will attend the meeting, an official statement read.
