ISLAMABAD: Elon Musk, Twitter’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), announced a new “freedom of speech,” policy on Friday. The billionaire specifically stated that it did not mean “freedom of reach” — Tweets having hate speech would be “deboosted” and “demonetized.” Implying that they would not get viral attention.

He further said that the Tweets would remain on the platform. However, they would only be found if someone specifically looked for them.

After acquiring Twitter, Musk said the “bird is free,” signaling freedom of expression on the microblogging platform. However, it didn’t go as planned, and hate speech skyrocketed within hours.

Musk further clarified that the policy would apply to the specific tweet, not the whole account.

Elon Musk Issues Ultimatum

Earlier on Friday, Musk issued an ultimatum that led to its headquarters shutting down and many key staff resigning, leaving the future of social media service in doubt.

The CEO has drawn criticism for introducing significant changes to the California-based company he recently acquired for $44 billion.
