ISLAMABAD: Elon Musk, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Twitter, recently tweeted, “Namaste” — though it is a respectful Hindu greeting, the tweet’s timing has raised eyebrows.
After taking over Twitter, Musk fired over 50 percent of its workforce, including over 90% of Indian engineering and production personnel. Indian Twitter team had been significantly impacted by the job cuts. The firm had just over 200 employees in India. The employees who have been retained are mostly in sales operations.
India also has one of the most heated political discussions on Twitter, with opposing parties frequently tossing accusations and charging one another with disinformation campaigns.
Musk said that he had “no choice” as the firm was losing over $4 million daily.
Elon Musk says Twitter users continue to peak
Despite the firm’s human resource woes, Musk announced that the microblogging platform is witnessing an “all-time” high influx of users. The CEO tweeted that 1.6 million users had been added to the social media service this past week.
However, the CEO has drawn criticism for introducing significant changes, including paid verification and content moderation, to the California-based company he recently acquired for $44 billion.
