KUALA LUMPUR: In a Farewell Banquet held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, King Abdullah, and Queen Tunku Azizah bid an emotional goodbye as the monarch’s five-year term concludes. The event, attended by royals from across Malaysia, celebrated the King’s dedication during his tenure as the 16th monarch.

Addressing the gathering, King Abdullah expressed mixed emotions, wiping away tears as he spoke about completing his reign alongside Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized that every beginning has an end and acknowledged stepping down with a sense of sadness, happiness, and gratitude. Reflecting on his term, the King remarked, “Let history judge” regarding the success of his reign.

Having appointed three prime ministers and navigated the country through uncertainty, King Abdullah stressed the importance of unity during challenging times. He expressed deep concern over the potential crumbling of forged unity due to weaknesses and negligence.

Paying tribute to Queen Tunku, King Abdullah acknowledged their 38-year journey, expressing gratitude for her capturing the hearts of Malaysians. The Queen, visibly moved, received heartfelt praise from the King, emphasizing her role in winning the hearts of the nation.

The monarch’s tenure concludes on January 30, with Ibrahim Ismail of Johor set to succeed him the following day. Malaysia’s elective monarchy involves the King’s election for a five-year term from the rulers of the nine Malaysian states.

The Farewell Banquet symbolizes the end of an era and sets the stage for a new chapter in Malaysia’s monarchy, with King Abdullah leaving behind a legacy marked by both challenges and unity.
