ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has attributed the nationwide riots in France to “institutional racism” and the country’s colonial history. The French government has been grappling with riots and looting in Paris and various parts of the country since the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M., a French citizen of Algerian descent, by a police officer during a traffic stop last Tuesday.

Erdogan, who has positioned himself as a champion of Muslims worldwide since his tenure as the leader of Turkey’s Islamic-rooted party for the past two decades, placed blame for the unrest on “Islamophobia” connected to France’s colonial legacy.

Speaking on television after chairing a weekly cabinet meeting, he stated, “In countries known for their colonial past, cultural racism has turned into institutional racism. At the root of the events that started in France is the social architecture built by this mentality. Most of the immigrants who are condemned to live in ghettos, who are systematically oppressed, are Muslims.”

Erdogan Condemns Widespread Looting in France

Erdogan also condemned the widespread looting that has accompanied the protests, emphasizing that the streets should not be used as a means to seek justice. However, he also expressed the view that authorities should learn from the social unrest. “It is clear the authorities should also learn from the social explosion,” he added.

The riots in France have sparked a heated debate about systemic issues of racism, discrimination, and social inequality in the country. The French government has been working to address these concerns and restore calm amid the ongoing unrest.

Erdogan’s comments further add to the international discourse surrounding the riots, highlighting the deep-seated societal issues that underpin the protests. As the situation continues to evolve, French authorities face the challenge of effectively addressing the root causes of the unrest and finding lasting solutions to promote social justice and inclusivity.
