ANKARA, Turkey: In light of recent escalations in Lebanon, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed concerns that Israel is intent on widening the conflict in the region.

During a press conference, Erdogan urged Western nations to implement “deterrent steps” in response to Israel’s actions, emphasizing that the ongoing war in Gaza will be a central theme in his upcoming speech at the UN General Assembly.

Erdogan referenced specific attacks in Lebanon, including incidents that reportedly involved the targeting of communication devices used by Hezbollah, resulting in the deaths of 39 individuals. While these attacks are widely attributed to Israeli forces, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.

He stressed the need for increased pressure on Israel to prevent further regional disaster. “It is time for all countries with the mission of protecting world peace to come up with solutions that will stop Israel,” he stated, calling for a permanent ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian aid access.

Turkey has actively condemned Israel’s military operations, which escalated following Hamas’s attack on October 7, claiming significant casualties on both sides. As part of its protest, Ankara has halted all trade with Israel and joined South Africa in seeking action at the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide—claims that Israel has categorically dismissed as unfounded.

Erdogan’s comments highlight Turkey’s commitment to advocating for a more robust international response to the crisis, underscoring the complexities of the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
