ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia is experiencing a surge in malaria cases, with 328,881 new cases reported since the beginning of the year, as stated by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the WHO Ethiopia Health Cluster Bulletin report the country has witnessed 84 deaths between January 1 and 28, marking a 16 percent increase in mortality compared to the previous month.

Health partners are actively mobilizing resources to support malaria prevention, treatment, and awareness campaigns throughout Ethiopia to address the escalating health crisis.

This comes after the WHO reported in November that Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, had recorded the highest number of malaria cases in at least seven years.

Malaria is endemic in Ethiopia, particularly prevalent in areas below 2,000 meters of altitude, which encompasses three-quarters of the country’s land mass and an estimated population of 52 million. The current situation underscores the importance of intensified efforts to combat and manage malaria in these affected regions. –Xinhua/APP
