ISLAMABAD: The Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and Pakistan’s Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) have announced a partnership to jointly organize the “Green Legacy Forum.”

This initiative aims to raise awareness and mobilize all sectors of society for a large-scale plantation of fruits and vegetables, focusing on ecosystem restoration, food security, and sustainable development.

The collaboration was formalized during a meeting between Jemal Beker Abdula, Special Envoy & Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Pakistan, and Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director of SDPI, held at the Ethiopian Embassy.

The forum will feature participation from parliamentarians, the diplomatic and business communities, environmentalists, religious leaders, media representatives, youth, and civil society. It will highlight Ethiopia’s successful Green Legacy initiative, led by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, which focuses on environmental conservation, ecosystem restoration, and food security.

Ambassador Jemal Beker praised SDPI for its expertise in critical areas such as economics, climate change, food security, human rights, health, and social protection. He emphasized the importance of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to plant 7.5 billion seedlings across the country by 2024.

Since 2019, Ethiopia has planted over 40 billion seedlings of vegetables, fruits, and animal feed, which has significantly enhanced its ability to tackle climate challenges, reduce poverty, create jobs, and ensure food security.

The Ambassador stressed the urgency of launching a nationwide campaign in Pakistan to address the impacts of climate change, particularly in light of the devastating floods of 2022. He highlighted the need for collective action to mitigate the effects of global warming and environmental degradation.

Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri informed the Ambassador about SDPI’s annual development and economic forum, which gathers global, regional, and local experts to discuss pressing issues with grassroots impacts. He proposed a high-level plenary at the forum to engage key stakeholders and international experts in promoting the Green Legacy and climate action.

Additionally, Dr. Suleri, who is also a member of the Advisory Committee for COP29 in Baku, announced plans for an international jurists plenary at COP29 titled “Green Justice.”

This session will foster dialogue among top-level judiciary from both developed and developing countries on climate justice. He offered SDPI’s full support to the Ethiopian Embassy in involving state-level dignitaries in this important discussion.
