Ethiopian Officials Discuss Active BRICS Integration

ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopian government officials gathered in Addis Ababa to discuss the nation’s integration into the BRICS grouping and to strategize on mutual benefits within the framework.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the country’s BRICS Senior Officials Committee held its second session on Thursday.

The committee, comprising senior officials from various federal institutions, explored avenues to advance Ethiopia’s national interests within the BRICS mechanism.

The ministry emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to actively engage with BRICS, aiming to facilitate partnerships, bolster people-to-people relations, and enhance the multilateral system.

Following its membership in the BRICS mechanism, Ethiopia established both a national ministerial committee and a senior officials committee to ensure active participation. The latter reports to the former.

Meles Alem, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hailed Ethiopia’s participation in the recent BRICS Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas Meeting in Moscow as a significant diplomatic achievement. He highlighted this participation as Ethiopia’s foremost diplomatic success of the week.

Originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the BRICS platform expanded during the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2023.

Ethiopia, as Africa’s second most populous nation, expressed its eagerness to contribute constructively to the BRICS family, with a focus on fostering South-South cooperation.
