BRUSSELS: The European Union has evacuated all its diplomatic staff from Haiti because of “the dramatic deterioration of the security situation” there with armed gangs taking control of much of its capital, a spokesman said Monday as reported by AFP.

European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano revealed that all EU staff have been removed and evacuated from Haiti due to the alarming control exerted by armed gangs over much of the capital, Port-au-Prince. “Currently we have removed and evacuated all the European Union staff from Haiti,” Peter Stano said.

Expressing deep concern over the recent developments in Haiti, Stano emphasized the EU’s decision to limit its activities on the ground and relocate the staff of the EU delegation to a safer location outside the country. While essential personnel continue to work remotely, operations from within Haiti have been suspended temporarily.

Stano noted that the EU remains vigilant and will adapt its operations according to the evolving security situation in Haiti. The decision to evacuate diplomatic personnel underscores the severity of the crisis gripping the nation and the need for immediate action to ensure the safety of personnel and the stability of operations.

Meanwhile, CARICOM, a coalition of Caribbean nations, has convened a meeting in Jamaica on Monday, summoning envoys from the United States, France, Canada, and the United Nations to discuss the escalating violence in Haiti and explore avenues for providing assistance to the beleaguered nation.
