EU Warns Elon Musk of Sanctions After Twitter Suspends Journalists

ISLAMABAD: The European Union on Friday informed and warned Twitter owner Elon Musk that the social media platform, under a future media, could face sanctions. This development comes after Twitter accounts of several journalists were suspended, which the EU termed as “worrying”.

Taking to Twitter Vera Jourova, EU commissioner, said respect of fundamental rights and media freedom is a requirement of the Digital Services Act (DSA) of the European Union. She added that the arbitrary suspension of journalists on Twitter is worrying.

Jourova informed Musk about issues redlines and sanctions linked to them.

EU legislation’s two pieces back this warning, however, one of them not is yet to be adopted.

The conditions which companies serving European internet users have to follow under the European Union’s DSA include strict SOPs against disinformation, manipulative algorithms, and other harmful influencers of the web.
