BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) has announced its readiness to establish a “constructive relationship for shared prosperity and stability” with Turkey, according to statements made by an EU official on Monday. Ana Pisonero, the spokesperson on enlargement, reiterated the EU’s strategic interest in fostering cooperative and mutually beneficial ties with Turkey and its people.

Addressing reporters at the European Commission’s daily news briefing, Pisonero emphasized the EU’s commitment to engaging with Turkey based on shared values, including human rights, the rule of law, adherence to international law, and stability for the benefit of all citizens involved. She further highlighted that the EU-Turkey cooperation aims to support a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Erdogan Criticizes EU

Pisonero’s remarks came in response to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s criticism of the EU on Sunday, where he accused the bloc of failing to fulfill its promises to Turkey. Despite the challenges and past political roadblocks, the EU remains committed to working towards a constructive relationship with Turkey.

In line with this commitment, the European Commission is actively working on a comprehensive report detailing the current state of EU-Turkey relations. This report, as per the request of EU leaders’ summit in June, is set to be published later this autumn, outlining the progress made and the areas where further collaboration can be enhanced.

Turkey had applied for EU membership in 1987, initiating accession talks in 2005. However, negotiations were suspended by the Council of the European Union in 2018, a move attributed to political obstacles from certain EU member states.
