In a statement, the Council had imposed measures against 18 individuals and five entities due to gender-based violence. It added that the sanctioned people include the acting Taliban Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Afghanistan Mawlawi Abdul Hakim Haqqani, acting Taliban Ministers of Education Mawlawi Habibullah Agha, and acting Minister for Justice Abdul-Hakim Sharei.

The statement said that these Taliban leaders had a “role in depriving women and girls of their rights to education, equal treatment, and access to justice.”

Since the Afghan Taliban took power in Afghanistan, they have issued several decrees restricting women and girls from attending schools and public spaces. Western media reported that Afghan Taliban prohibited women from working with humanitarian organizations.

Social activists, international groups, and rights advocates sharply criticized the Afghan Taliban’s recent restrictions on women’s beauty salons.

Dozens of Afghan women also held a protest against the beauty salon ban after the authorities in Afghanistan ordered their closure in the country.
