BRUSSELS: The European Union (UN) on Monday imposed sanctions against six persons in Sudan over the war between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that started last year.

Those put under sanctions include a general commanding the RSF in West Darfur, who according to the EU Council is responsible for committing brutalities, instigating ethnically motivated killings, the looting and burning of communities and sexual violence.

They also include a prominent tribal leader of the Mahamid clan affiliated with the RSF in West Darfur and the RSF’s financial adviser.

On the side of the Sudanese army, sanctions hit the commander of the Sudanese Air Force and the director of Defense Industry Systems for their responsibility in the indiscriminate aerial bombing of densely populated residential areas.

Former Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Ahmed Karti Mohamed is also included in the list. After the sanctions assets of these six people will be frozen and a travel ban in the 27-nation European Union will be imposed.

Earlier, the international chief of the medical charity Doctors Without Borders said that the ongoing civil war in Sudan had provoked one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises in decades. The war, which started in April 2023 has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over nine million people, the United Nations said.

According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the number of people forcibly displaced stood at a record 117.3 million as of the end of last year, saying that this figure could rise further without major international political changes.
