BRUSSELS: The antitrust regulators of the European Union (EU) will assess whether US tech giant Apple’s operating system for iPads complies with European standards, said the European Commission on Monday.
The step by the EU body followed Apple’s publication of a compliance report for its iPad system, designated by the commission in April as a vital opening for businesses to reach their clients.
“The Commission will now carefully assess whether the measures adopted for iPad OS are effective in complying with the DMA obligations,” the EU antitrust watchdog said in a statement.

“The Commission’s assessment will also be based on the input of interested stakeholders,” it said.
Under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into effect earlier this year, Apple is required to allow its users to select the default web browser of their own choice on iPads, permit headphones and smart pens to access iPad OS features and allow other app stores on its operating system.
DMA breaches can cause heavy penalties to companies which could be 10% of their global annual income.
