BUCHAREST: The conservative European People’s Party (EPP), the largest bloc in the EU parliament, officially backed European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen’s bid for a second term on Thursday.

Having steered the European Commission through various crises, from the Covid pandemic to the conflict in Ukraine, since assuming office in 2019, the former defense minister is seeking reappointment until 2029.

The support of the EPP is crucial for the 65-year-old German leader, who requires the endorsement of the EU parliament to secure her position.

At the party congress in Bucharest, 400 EPP delegates voted in favor of von der Leyen, with 89 voting against her.

Following the vote, von der Leyen expressed gratitude to the EPP representatives, including lawmakers, party leaders, and 12 heads of state and government, for their trust, support, and determination.

Looking ahead, she emphasized the upcoming 90 days leading to the election and urged for a concerted effort to persuade and engage with the public, aiming to earn their support and trust.
