BRUSSELS: The European Union has said that it will temporarily ease sanctions against Syria to accelerate aid supplies to the quake-hit country, western media reported on Thursday.

The EU said in a statement that the aid and relief organizations would no longer require to obtain permit from EU Governments before providing aid and service to Syria.

The statement added that the new measures would last for 180 days, and the EU took the decision due to the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

The enormous 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6 has killed over 42,000 people in Turkey and over 3,600 in war hit Syria.

The European Union said that its member countries are at the forefront of donors of aid to Syria. It added that the EU countries also provided about 3.5 million euros for immediate humanitarian needs in Syria.

The EU had imposed sanctions against Syria in 2011 due to Damascus’s violent repression in the country.
