ISLAMABAD: Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, former chief minister of Punjab, has challenged his detention under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) in the Islamabad High Court.

The petition was filed by his lawyer, Abdul Raziq. The seeks to invalidate the arrest made under the MPO on Friday, right after the LHC granted him bail and instructed the authorities not to detain him in any other case.

The petition said that Parvez Elahi was being targeted on political grounds. The petition has requested that the MPO order issued on September 1 be declared illegal, null and void. It further asked that the court direct authorities to release Parvez Elahi.

Contempt plea

Wife of Parvez Elahi submitted a contempt of court petition to the Lahore High Court due to her husband not being safely transferred home as per court directives.

The petition named the DIG of operations, DIG investigation, and SP of high court security as parties involved. Qaisara Elahi, the former chief minister’s wife, lodged the petition and urged the Lahore High Court’s Chief Justice to schedule the hearing today.

Despite the court’s directive, the police failed to ensure Parvez Elahi’s safe return home, according to the petitioner. She is now urging the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the DIG operations and the DIG investigation.

Following a corruption case release order from the Lahore High Court, the former chief minister was re-arrested. Subsequently, he was transferred to Attock Jail on Friday.

Elahi, a prominent figure in the PTI, was arrested by Islamabad police from the Canal Road in Lahore as he was on his way to his residence after his release from court. The police stated that Elahi’s arrest was under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).
