ISLAMABAD: Health expert on Saturday discussed the growing mental health crisis and urged people to join drives in promoting mental well-being, reducing stigma, and supporting those struggling with stress as the world navigates an unprecedented rise in mental health disorders.
He noted that mental health disorders are increasing, with 50% to 70% of the global population expected to experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives. Dr. Malik highlighted that stigma is a major barrier to seeking help, as fear of judgment, shame, and rejection often leads people to suffer in silence, worsening their condition.
Dr. Malik suggested that by sharing our stories, we can break the silence and foster a culture of understanding. He stressed that addressing the mental health crisis requires a unified response from governments, healthcare systems, communities, and individuals. Together, they can promote mental well-being, provide accessible support services, and reduce stigma.
He explained that stress and anxiety significantly impact physical health, triggering the body’s “fight or flight” response, which can cause physical symptoms like increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and higher body temperature. Dr. Malik encouraged a journey of self-discovery to overcome stress, anxiety, and negativity.
This involves critically examining our lifestyle and eating habits, adopting a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and practicing mindfulness techniques like meditation and yoga. Additionally, he advised recognizing and challenging negative thought patterns and replacing them with positive affirmations and self-compassion.
