JERUSALEM: Nine Israeli soldiers were wounded, two of them seriously, when ordnance went off at a military base in the south, the army said on Wednesday.

A military statement said munitions exploded on a military base in southern Israel and the incident is under investigation.

It added that the soldiers injured in the incident were receiving treatment. Local media reported the explosion took place at a military base in the Negev Desert.

It came as the Israeli army has intensified its war on Gaza after October 7.

According to the Gaza health ministry, Israel’s relentless bombardment has killed at least 36,550 Palestinians, mostly civilians.

Meanwhile, heavy fighting rocked the Gaza Strip on Tuesday following G7 and Arab countries urging both Hamas and Israel to agree to a ceasefire and captives release agreement outlined by US President Joe Biden.

The US said it would seek a UNSC resolution to back the three-phase roadmap which Joe Biden presented last Friday as Israel’s plan, even as the war has ground on.
