Explosion Claims 2 Lives Near US-Canada Border

NEW YORK: At least two people were killed after a vehicle exploded near the US-Canada border on Wednesday as it was heading toward a checkpoint, Western media reported.

The vehicle was coming from Canada and exploded after reaching a secondary search point at the Rainbow Bridge.

The iconic bridge links Canada with New York state of the US. Authorities have not yet to determine the cause of the explosion.

The US authorities are at the crime scene and investing the incident. According to officials, the White House is monitoring the Rainbow Bridge where incident took place near famous tourist spot, Niagara Falls.

Biden briefed about the explosion

According to the White House President Joe Biden had been briefed about the explosion.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau briefing the parliament termed it a very serious situation while announcing the closure of four crossings.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said state police and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force were observing all entry points into the state.

The reports said two people were in the car, when it was selected for a secondary check. The car later sped up and smashed into a barrier and exploded.

The incident occurred n the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest days for travel in the US.

Rainbow Bridge is among the busiest crossing points between Canada and the United States. According to US Customs and Border Protection it has 16 vehicle lanes and is normally open around the clock.
