MOSCOW: Rail traffic in Russia’s Samara region came to a standstill on Monday following an explosion on a bridge, as reported by Russian news agencies citing rescue services.

The railways company attributed the incident to the intervention of unauthorized individuals, clarifying that no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion.

According to the company’s statement, rail traffic has been temporarily suspended in the affected section of the region as a precautionary measure.

The blast, described as caused by an explosive device damaging a pillar on a rail bridge spanning the Chapaevka river, has raised concerns about the safety and security of Russia’s rail infrastructure.

Incidents of sabotage on Russia’s rail network have escalated following Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine in February 2022, reflecting heightened tensions and security challenges in the region.

Authorities are investigating the explosion, with rescue services and relevant agencies mobilized to assess the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of rail operations.

The disruption in rail traffic underscores the broader implications of geopolitical conflicts on critical infrastructure, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures and vigilance in safeguarding transportation networks.
