ISLAMABAD: The claim that the former National Assembly Speaker Elahi Bux Soomro had passed away.
In fact, Elahi Bux Soomro is alive but his wife Parveen Elahi Bux has passed away.
The story:
Numerous media outlets and news channels in Pakistan circulated the false news that Former National Assembly Speaker Elahi Bux Soomro had died at the age of 97 in a Karachi hospital.
The media reports claimed that Elahi Bakhsh Soomro succumbed to heart failure during treatment at a private hospital in Karachi, with his body supposedly being transported to his hometown of Jacobabad for burial.
Even Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaraul Haq Kakar also expressed his condolence over the “demise” of Elahi Bux Soomro.
The condolence message from PM Kakar was disseminated by Pakistan’s state news agency, Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), and this misinformation was further propagated by various other news outlets.
However, the family sources told a local media outlet that Elahi Bux Soomro is alive and in good health. They confirmed that it was his wife who had passed away and was laid to rest in her ancestral graveyard in Jacobabad. One individual on social media platform X noted that while some media outlets retracted their erroneous reports about the death of #IllahiBuxSoomro following their tweets, others persisted in disseminating the false narrative.
The Verdict:
After confirming from the family sources and considering all available evidence, it is evident that the news of Elahi Bux Soomro’s death is false.
