WASHINGTON: Kamala Harris has defended her demand for the suspension of Donald Trump’s Twitter account in a 2019 interview, but she did not say to ban the social media platform in the United States or comment on Elon Musk.
Following Brazil’s telecommunications regulator had announced on August 30 that it would suspend access to the X in that country, some users on social media misrepresented an old footage of comments by the Kamila Harris.
A social media post dated September 3 that includes the footage is captioned, “Kamala Haris said she wants to suspend X if she wins.” Other social media posts say, “BREAKING: Harris says Brazil was right to take down the X.”
According to Reuters news agency, Kamila Harris did not say she would block X if she wins, nor did she refer to Elon Musk, who bought the social media platform in 2022. In a 2019 interview, she defended her call to suspend Donald Trump’s Twitter account but she did not suggest suspending X in the US or refer to Musk, who did not own the social media platform at the time. Therefore, the claim was misleading about Kamila Haris.
