VALENCIA, Spain: An old video has been misidentified online, incorrectly implying it depicts the devastating floods that struck Valencia, Spain, in October 2024.

At least 155 people lost their lives when heavy rain hit the region on October 29, causing significant destruction, including the collapse of bridges and buildings. Spain’s state meteorological agency reported that some areas of Valencia experienced a year’s worth of rain in just eight hours.

Social media posts circulated a video of a car being carried away by floodwaters, with a person sitting on the roof, suggesting it was filmed in Valencia. One Facebook post, dated October 30, 2024, claimed, “People cling desperately to their car roofs as severe floods sweep them away.”

However, this video actually first surfaced in the summer of 2023, showing flooding in Zaragoza, located in Aragon. Reports from July 7, 2023, including those from El Periódico de Aragón and media outlet Público, confirm this. Zaragoza’s mayor, Natalia Chueca, stated that there were no fatalities from the torrential rain that year, although police reported that 150 vehicles were affected.

VERDICT: Miscaptioned. The video depicts flooding in Zaragoza from July 2023, not in Valencia in October 2024.
