Fariba Adelkhah, French Academic Released from Iran Prison

PARIS: Fariba Adelkhah, a French-Iranian academic was arrested by Iranian authorities in June 2019 and was undergoing a five-year sentence on national security charges, was released from an Iranian prison on Friday, according to the French foreign ministry.

France “welcomed” the release, according to a foreign ministry statement. Adelkhah was freed from Evin, as per a source close to her who declined to be identified, but it was unclear whether she could flee her home and return to France.

The French foreign ministry said it was essential that Fariba Adelkhah regain all of her freedoms, including the right to return to France if she so desired.

Adelkhah was sentenced to 5 years in prison for conspiring against national security in May 2020, charges her supporters have consistently denied.
