MEMPHIS, USA: Two individuals tragically lost their lives and six others sustained injuries during a shooting incident at an unauthorized block party in Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday.
The Memphis Police Department confirmed that two individuals were found deceased at the scene, while one of the wounded remains in critical condition at a local hospital, as reported on the department’s social media platform.
The shooting unfolded at an unpermitted block party attended by approximately 200 to 300 people near Orange Mound Park in Tennessee, according to earlier statements from the department.
Gun violence remains a pervasive issue in the United States, a nation where firearms outnumber the population. Efforts to tighten gun regulations often face significant political opposition.
This year alone, the United States has witnessed 120 mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident resulting in four or more individuals being wounded or killed. Last year concluded with a total of 656 such shootings.
