KARACHI: Fatima Bhutto, granddaughter of former prime minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Graham (Gibran) were married in an intimate nikkah ceremony in Karachi on Thursday, announced her brother Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Junior on Friday.

The nikkah ceremony of daughter of Mir Murtaza Bhutto and niece of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, took place at the family’s residence at 70 Clifton in Karachi. Bhutto Jr also called for prayers for the newly-wed couple.

“On behalf of our father, Shaheed Mir Murtaza Bhutto and the Bhutto family, I’m very happy to share some happy news. My sister Fatima and Graham were married in an intimate nikkah ceremony yesterday at our home, 70 Clifton,” Bhutto Jr took to twitter to announce.

He further wrote: “The ceremony was attended by Fatima’s loved ones in our grandfather’s library, a place that means a lot to my dear sister. Due to the difficult circumstances felt by our fellow countrymen and women, we all felt it would be inappropriate to celebrate lavishly. Please keep Fatima and Graham (Gibran) in your prayers. God bless you and thank you.”

Born in Kabul, Fatima Bhutto (40) is a writer and columnist. She is the daughter of Murtaza Bhutto, sister of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Jr, niece of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and granddaughter of former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Fatima’s brother, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Junior also shared a picture of the couple and congratulated the newlyweds.

The Bhutto family has a great contribution for Pakistani politics, with several members playing key roles in the Pakistan People’s Party. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto himself was hanged in 1979 after being overthrown in a military coup.

Despite the family’s political legacy, Fatima has largely remained out of the political spotlight. She has instead focused on her career as a writer and activist. She has also been critical of the traditional political system in Pakistan.

Born on 29 May 1982, Fatima has written several books, including the novel “The Shadow of the Crescent Moon,” which explores the lives of people in a small Pakistani town near the Afghan border and a memoir titled “Songs of Blood and Sword,” which tells the story of her family’s turbulent political history.

She also contributed articles and essays to various international publications, such as The Guardian, The Financial Times, and The New York Times.
