Federal Government not to Leave Flood-hit People in Distress, PM Assures

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said on Wednesday that the federal government would not leave the flood-hit people of Sindh in distress and would continue to take steps to mitigate their problems and sufferings.

The prime minister visited Kot Diji and Pir Guddu towns to inspect the flood-hit Khairpur district and post-disaster rehabilitation work in the area.

On the occasion, the PM addressed the flood victims, saying the people of Sindh suffered from human as well material loss during the devastating floods in the province. The federal government provided the utmost assistance and resources to the provincial government to overcome the effects of the massive disaster.

The government distributes Rs700 billion to flood victims

He said that the govt distributed 70 billion rupees to the flood victims under the Benazir Income Support Program as the welfare of the masses was its top priority. 

The premier said that the reconstruction and rehabilitation work had been completed to a large extent, but the de-watering of the Dadu’s inundated areas needed immediate attention.

He said after the devastating floods, around 20 million people, including 9 million children were in dire need of help from the government and it needed billions of rupees to deal with the challenges of food and medicine.

He further said that Pakistan was being severely affected by climate change despite minimal contribution to carbon emissions.

The prime minister appreciated the overseas Pakistanis for contributing 2.75 billion rupees in donations to the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund. He reiterated that the fund would be utilized transparently.

He assured the flood-affected people that the government would build houses to accommodate them properly. He met the flood-hit people at makeshifts and inquired about the condition of facilities being provided to them by the government.

The premier also announced the establishment of a COMSATS University campus in Khairpur.
