KARACHI: On Ramazan nights in the metropolis, it’s a common sight to see men, clad in casual t-shirts and trousers, erupting in excitement over wickets and sixes. Night cricket, now ingrained in the culture, used to lack gender neutrality due to the absence of safe spaces for women. However, Khelo Kricket, a sports organization, spearheaded an initiative to rectify this by organizing a women’s cricket league during the holy month.

Recently, a three-day event dubbed ‘Khelo Khawateen’ concluded at Kutchi Memon Ground. This tournament, now in its 7th edition since its inception in 2016, featured 12 teams including Athletic Club, BSL Pink, MW Tigers, and more. According to Hadeel Obaid, the founder of Khelo Kricket, the event aimed to carve out a safe haven for girls to indulge in cricket, with over 120 girls participating this year.

The ground buzzed with anticipation as spectators awaited the results. Teenage girls dashed across the pitch, driven by determination, while their parents watched proudly. Zainab, awarded player of the match, expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the significance of providing safe spaces for female players.

The majority of participants, aged between 15 and 20, relished their first nighttime tournament experience. Parents, fervently supporting their daughters, emphasized the importance of nurturing their talents and breaking gender barriers. Muhammad Iqbal and Ms. Sohail exemplified this dedication, prioritizing their daughters’ aspirations.

The matches concluded around 2 am, with sponsors honoring the top teams and players. This event not only celebrates cricket but also champions gender inclusivity and parental support in sports.
