BANGKOK: Brazil has won the right to host the Women’s World Cup in 2027, beating a joint Belgium-Netherlands-Germany bid in a vote at FIFA’s annual congress, western media reported on Friday.

AFP reported that delegates have voted 119 to 78 to send the 10th edition of the mega event to South America for the first time, sparking jubilant celebrations by the Brazilian bid team in the Bangkok conference hall.

Following the success of the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand, which generated a record $570 million, FIFA aimed to expand women’s football further. Brazil’s bid incorporates 10 stadiums from the 2014 men’s World Cup, with iconic venues like Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana slated for key matches. However, there are concerns regarding the maintenance of some stadiums, notably the Amazonia stadium in Manaus. Additionally, the Brazilian Football Confederation faces internal challenges, with legal disputes surrounding its leadership.  Despite Brazil’s rich football history, the women’s team has yet to claim a World Cup title, and their performance in the 2023 tournament was very disappointing.
