GOMA: In the war-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), fierce fighting erupted on Friday in a crucial town between government troops and M23 rebels, local media reported.

The clashes occurred in Kanyabayonga, situated on the northern front of the conflict in North Kivu province. Since 2021, the region has been plagued by violence following the resurgence of the M23 (March 23 Movement).

Kanyabayonga is strategically positioned as a gateway to Butembo and Beni in the north, both key hubs for the Nande tribe and vital commercial centers.

“We have confirmed two fatalities and five injuries from the bombings,” stated a health source speaking anonymously to AFP.

With a population exceeding 60,000, Kanyabayonga lies approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, which itself is encircled by rebels reportedly backed by Rwanda.

M23 forces made advances towards Kanyabayonga from Lubero, marking the fourth territory in North Kivu province they have entered, following Rutshuru, Nyiragongo, and Masisi. While parts of the group infiltrated Kanyabayonga’s outskirts, they were repelled by the army.

“The fighting is centered in the commune of Kanyabayonga and its environs, though the military remains in control,” disclosed an administrative official to AFP on Friday.

“Hostilities are concentrated in the outlying districts, with suspicions that the rebels are attempting to circumvent our positions,” added a security source speaking under anonymity.

According to the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office, in its monthly report released on Friday, “The M23 has continued its northward advance in North Kivu province, particularly in the Lubero territory. The front line is now focused on the city of Kanyabayonga.”

The report further underscored that these clashes “have resulted in civilian displacement,” with humanitarian organizations forced to suspend operations due to security concerns.

Furthermore, the report highlighted ongoing conflicts in the Sake area west of Goma, noting their severe impact on civilians, who are fleeing their homes in large numbers.
