UNITED NATIONS: Finland’s President Alexander Stubb recently criticized the UN Security Council (UNSC) for failing to fulfil its primary role of maintaining global peace, arguing that it no longer reflects today’s geopolitical realities.
Speaking at the Summit of the Future, he pointed to unresolved conflicts in Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan, and Syria as examples of the Council’s ineffectiveness. Stubb also emphasized the Council’s lack of representation, with only one member from Asia and none from Latin America or Africa.
To address these issues, Stubb proposed three key reforms: expanding the Council with five new members from underrepresented regions, abolishing veto powers for all members, and suspending voting rights for countries that violate the UN Charter. His call for reform highlights the urgent need to make the UNSC more inclusive and effective in tackling modern global challenges.
