LONNDON, England: A fire broke out early Wednesday at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, where the UK’s nuclear-powered submarines are constructed.
Authorities confirmed that two individuals were hospitalized with suspected smoke inhalation but that there were no other injuries. Cumbria Constabulary assured the public there is “no nuclear risk” from the incident and advised nearby residents to stay indoors with windows and doors closed as a precaution.
The historic shipyard, established over 150 years ago and located about 220 miles from London, builds and maintains submarines for the Royal Navy, including vessels capable of carrying the UK’s nuclear missiles. The cause of fire is under investigation.
