First All-women Expedition: Pakistani Women Vow to Summit K2

GILGIT: The first all-women expedition team will attempt to climb K2, the world’s second-highest peak at 8,611 meters, next month. The event is being organized with the cooperation of Pakistan Army and eight women will take part in the mega event. Anum Uzair is also taking part in the event as she along with her husband makes history by summiting Nepal peak.

Talking to media, Anum said she is proud to be part of the First Women K2 Expedition. She stated that she and her team want to send a message to other women through this expedition that they can do anything if they want.

According to Anum, “Our message is simple: men should support the women in their families.” She added, “We felt we should go beyond this. First, we conquered six thousand meters and then started expeditions to peaks of eight thousand meters.” Anum said that the people of Pakistan have given them the title of ‘the first Pakistani mountaineering couple,’ which is a matter of pride for them.

Anam’s husband, Barrister Ahmed Uzair, said that they want to visit hilly areas and peaks during the vacations as mountains are very close to their hearts and “it is always fun for his family”.  He maintained that Pakistan Army gave an opportunity to Anum to take part in the First Women K2 Expedition, adding it is a great proud for his family. He further said that the event will give a a strong message to women to actively take part in all fields.

The team members of the event completed a week-long climbing training at Sadpara Mountaineering School on Friday. According to the organizers, the six-member expedition team includes Anum Uzair from Lahore, Shama Baqir and Bibi Sultana from Shimshal, Afzoom from Gulmit of Hunza, and sisters Siddiqa Hanif and Amina Hanif from Ghanche. They aim to hoist Pakistan’s flag on K2.

Another team member Shama Baqir while talking to media expressed optimism about the women’s expedition team’s goal to conquer the world’s second-highest peak in this summer. She noted that although women in Pakistan have immense potential, they generally shy away from hiking. Through this adventure, she said, “We aim to send a message that women can dare and excel in this field too, and those interested should participate in mountaineering.”
