MUMBAI: In the wake of relentless rainfall that drenched India’s prosperous western state of Maharashtra, a devastating landslide befell a serene mountain village, leaving a trail of destruction and loss.

As per state officials’ accounts on Thursday, at least five individuals lost their lives, and several others were apprehended to be trapped beneath the debris.

The calamitous incident unfolded during the dark hours in the quaint hamlet of Irshalwadi, nestled approximately 60 kilometres away from the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, as reported by various media outlets, citing official sources, according to local media.

Regrettably, the village accommodated 48 families, and in the aftermath of the calamity, around 75 people were successfully evacuated. However, the grim reality remains that five precious lives have been claimed so far, casting a sombre pall over the region.

As Chief Minister Eknath Shinde personally surveyed the site, he acknowledged the difficulty in precisely ascertaining the number of individuals caught in the tragic event, leaving everyone on tenterhooks as the search for survivors persisted.

Compounding the woes of Maharashtra, the relentless rainfall has brought life to a standstill, resulting in the closure of schools, inundated roads, and disrupted train services across the state, despite its status as India’s wealthiest region.
