STOCKHOLM: Five people were killed after a construction elevator plummeted to the ground at a construction site in Sundbyberg, a suburb in northern Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Sweden’s prosecution service has launched an investigation into workplace violations, classifying the incident as an involuntary homicide.

The accident unfolded early on Monday, and the elevator, situated at a construction site for a 14-storey apartment building, suddenly crashed 20 meters (66 feet) to the ground. The victims, whose nationalities and identities are yet to be officially confirmed, were initially in serious condition but were tragically declared dead on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Gunnar Jonasson stated, “Efforts to establish the identities of the deceased are ongoing,” with families being informed of the heartbreaking news. The cause of the accident remains unknown, prompting a technical investigation at the construction site.

The victims, believed to be subcontracted workers on the project, were part of a group of approximately 50 builders present at the site. Tomas Kullberg, a spokesperson for the construction workers’ union Byggnads, suggested that the workers might have been foreign laborers.

Sweden’s prosecution service has classified the ongoing preliminary investigation as “workplace violations causing aggravated involuntary homicide.”
