HANOI: A flash flood swept away an entire hamlet in Vietnam, killing around 16 people and leaving dozens missing as deaths from a typhoon and its aftermath climbed to more than 141 on Wednesday.
According to Vietnamese state broadcaster VTV, the flow of water gushing down from a mountain in Lao Cai province Tuesday buried Lang Nu village with around 35 families in debris.
Officials said that rescuers have recovered around 16 bodies and are continuing the search for 40 others. The death toll from Typhoon Yagi and its aftermath has climbed to more than 141 as 69 others remain missing and hundreds were wounded, according to VTV.
Yagi was the strongest typhoon to hit Vietnam in decades. It made landfall Saturday with winds of up to 92 mph and despite weakening on Sunday, downpours have continued and rivers remain dangerously high.
Landslides and floods have caused most of the deaths, many of which have come in the northwestern Lao Cai province, bordering China, where Lang Nu area is located.
