LONDON: Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson deliberately misled the parliament in an unprecedented way over the issue of rule-breaking parties at his office during COVID-19 lockdowns, a committee revealed on Thursday in a damning report.

Johnson was boasting about remaining prime minister into the 2030s a year ago. But the disciplinary body for lawmakers, the privileges committee, said on Thursday that he should now be deprived of automatic access to parliament, according to Reuters.

The committee also accused the former prime minister of being involved in a campaign of abuse and intimidation towards them.

Johnson, who led the Conservatives to a landslide election victory in 2019, dismissed the report as a charade and lie, and alleged the committee of waging a vendetta against him.

The report, spread over more than 100 pages, detailed six events organized at Downing Street, the PM’s offices and residence.

The committee said that it is concluded that by deliberately misleading the House, Boris Johnson committed a serious contempt.

Most serious contempt against parliament

It added that the contempt was grave because it was committed by the most senior member of the government, the prime minister. There is no precedent for a premier having been found to have deliberately misled the parliament.
