ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has apprehended Sheikh Akhtar Hussain, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).
The arrest was carried out by the anti-corruption circle of the FIA. According to the FIA spokesperson, Sheikh Akhtar Hussain, who served as the CEO of DRAP in the year 2018-19, was appointed based on a Ph.D. degree that has now been determined to be fake. The arrest was made following the dismissal of his pre-arrest bail by a special judge central.
The FIA’s anti-corruption wing had initiated a case against the former DRAP CEO, accusing him of holding a fraudulent Ph.D. degree. The filed FIR alleged that Hussain possessed a dubious doctorate degree, which he allegedly used to secure the position of CEO at the country’s top drug regulatory authority.
The investigation into the authenticity of his Ph.D. degree revealed that the degree-awarding institution was not recognized, and the degree itself was confirmed as fake by the Sri Lankan Interpol. This development led to the arrest of Sheikh Akhtar Hussain as part of the ongoing efforts to address issues of corruption and fraudulent qualifications within regulatory bodies.
