Former Naga Separatist Leader Shot Dead in India’s Assam State

IMPHAL: In a tragic incident, Gaidinchungpow Rongmei, a former leader of the Naga Nationalist Council, was shot dead in the Jirighat area of Cachar district in India’s Assam state. The 56-year-old separatist leader was killed after an dispute broke out during a meeting of the group.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, and the police have registered a case of murder and common intention.

According to reports, an dispute erupted at the meeting, leading to the fatal shooting of Gaidinchungpow Rongmei. Another separatist leader was injured in the incident and has been admitted to Jiribam Hospital with bullet injuries.

Assam Police Launch Investigation

The Assam Police from Cachar stated that they have initiated an investigation into the case, and an FIR has been registered.

The Naga Nationalist Council, a historical political organization, was active from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. The organization declared independence ahead of India’s independence in 1947 but faced challenges and eventually saw a split in 1980, leading to the formation of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN).

The incident adds to the complex history of insurgency and political movements in the region.
