Former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s 95th Birth Anniversary Today

ISLAMABAD: Special ceremonies will be organized throughout the country by the ‘Jiyalas’ to observe 95th birth anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, former prime minister and founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was born on January 5, 1928. Bhutto graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1950 with the degree in political science.

He received a master’s degree in law from the University of Oxford. He passed a bar exam from Middle Temple, London, the same year. After completing his studies, Bhutto became a lawyer, and for sometime, Bhutto was a lecturer of constitutional law at Muslim Law College in Karachi.

He was the minister of commerce in the cabinet of Ex-Prime Minister Feroz Khan Noon under the former President of Pakistan Sikandar Mirza’s democratic government. From 1958 to 1965, Bhutto was the minister for foreign affairs of Pakistan and commerce in the cabinet of President Ayub Khan.

Bhutto founded the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in December 1967. In the general elections of Pakistan in 1970, the people’s party gained a victory in West Pakistan. In December 1971, General Yahya Khan handed over the state affairs of government to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

He held the office of the President from December 1971 to August 13, 1973. On August 14, 1973, Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister under the new Constitution. After the fall of Dhaka, Zulfikar Ali healed the wounds of the defeated nation. Shimla Agreement with India was the pinnacle of his diplomacy.

The Constitution of Pakistan, the unification of the Muslim Ummah, the Pakistan-China friendship, and the nuclear programme were the important feats of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
